The festival unfolds over roughly nine days, from the grand procession on 16 July to the return journey (Bahuda Yatra) on 24 July.
What is Rath Yatra?
Rath Yatra means "chariot journey" (it's also called the Car Festival). It celebrates the annual journey of Lord Jagannath — a beloved form of Lord Krishna / Vishnu — from his home at the Jagannath Temple in Puri to the Gundicha Temple, about 3 km away, said to be the home of his aunt.
What makes it extraordinary is that the Lord comes out of the temple so that everyone — regardless of caste, creed or background — can have his darshan. It is a festival of grace, inclusivity and boundless devotion.
The three deities and their chariots
Three deities ride out together, each on their own magnificent hand-built chariot:

The rituals around Rath Yatra
The festival is surrounded by beautiful traditions:
- Snana Purnima — before the yatra, the deities are given a grand ceremonial bath.
- Anavasara — the deities then rest in seclusion for a fortnight (said to "recover"), away from public view.
- Chhera Pahara — in a moving act of humility, the Gajapati King of Puri sweeps the chariots with a golden broom, showing that all are equal before the Lord.
- Bahuda Yatra — the return journey to the main temple.
- Suna Besha — after returning, the deities are adorned in dazzling golden attire.
The significance
Rath Yatra carries a deep message. The Lord does not wait inside the temple — he comes out to meet his devotees on the open road. It is a reminder that the Divine is accessible to all, and that devotion needs no barrier. To simply see the chariots, or to touch the rope, is considered a great blessing.
