Aja Ekadashi 2026: Date, Fasting Vidhi, Story of King Harishchandra & Karma Clearing

In the journey of life, almost everyone encounters seasons of unexplainable difficulty—moments when despite your best intentions and hard work, unexpected setbacks, financial loss, or personal grief seem to block your path.

When ancient sages asked Lord Krishna how a person can dissolve the heavy weight of past mistakes (Karmic blockages) and regain dignity, peace, and clarity, Lord Krishna revealed the sacred observance of Aja Ekadashi (also spelled Ananda Ekadashi).

Occurring on the Ekadashi Tithi (11th lunar day) of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada, Aja Ekadashi is celebrated as one of the most powerful days for spiritual purification, emotional healing, and karmic renewal.

In 2026, Aja Ekadashi will be observed on Monday, 7 September 2026 (with Parana on Tuesday, 8 September).

In this article, we will explore the legend of King Harishchandra—the ultimate embodiment of truth—understand why Aja Ekadashi clears mental burdens, and walk through the step-by-step fasting and puja guidelines.

The Inspiring Legend: King Harishchandra and the Test of Truth

The central story told on Aja Ekadashi is the famous, moving tale of King Harishchandra.

King Harishchandra was legendary throughout the three worlds for his unwavering commitment to truth (Satyavrata). To test his integrity, Sage Vishwamitra created a series of extreme circumstances. Through divine tests, Harishchandra surrendered his vast kingdom, his royal wealth, and his palace.

To pay a sacred vow, Harishchandra sold his beloved wife Taramati and son Rohitashva into domestic service, while he himself took a job as a humble keeper of a cremation ground (Dom). Even in the depth of poverty and grief, working in the dark cremation grounds, Harishchandra refused to tell a lie, steal, or abandon his duty.

One evening, Sage Gautama met Harishchandra at the cremation ground. Seeing the former king's profound suffering, the sage informed him that his present hardship was the final burning off of hidden past karmas. Sage Gautama instructed Harishchandra to observe a strict, sincere fast on the upcoming Aja Ekadashi dedicated to Lord Hrishikesha (Vishnu).

Harishchandra observed the Aja Ekadashi fast with absolute sincerity, spending the day in quiet prayer and satvik discipline. Moved by his truthfulness and penance, the Gods restored his kingdom, reunited his family, and showered divine blessings upon his reign.

The message of the katha is clear: Hardship is temporary, but integrity is immortal. Sincere prayer paired with truthful living clears even the heaviest dark clouds.

  4. Chant Mantras: Repeat "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" or "Hare Krishna" throughout the day.
